What is the Betty White Challenge?

Celebrating Betty White's Birthday!

Actress and animal rights advocate, Betty White sadly passed away on December 31st, 2021. In January 2022, a movement began on social media to ask people to donate to their local animal shelters in Betty’s name to celebrate what would have been her 100th birthday. Millions of dollars were donated to help shelters all over North America to help animals in need. There could be no better way to honour the legacy of Betty White than continue this new tradition and provide care for pets at our shelter.

We Raised Over $27,000 in 2022

The Sarnia & District Humane Society received more donations than any other shelter in Ontario for the 2022 Betty White Challenge! With the money raised we were able to offer low cost vet clinics to low income families. more than 400 dogs and cats were cared for by more than 30 volunteers.

Zinger's Story

In mid October we received a call from a rescue group in Quebec concerning a dog which had been shot in the leg. The dog required immediate Veterinary attention preferably from an orthopedic surgeon. Unfortunately, due to Zinger’s location, a vet could not be secured and their call for help remained unanswered.

On October 15th Zinger arrived at our shelter after travelling over 850km thru a chain of volunteer drivers.

Through the Betty White Challenge donations, we received in January, we were able to secure Orthopedic surgeon Dr Tom Kostuch to perform the surgery necessary on Zinger.

Zinger has healed well, and though he will have a slight limp, his leg was successfully saved.

We are so thankful to everyone who took a part in helping this wonderful boy get the chance he deserved. Special thanks to Zingers amazing foster family, who have provided exceptional care and a loving home to him throughout his long recovery.
